Household Hazardous Waste Program Assessment

Household Hazardous Waste Program Assessment

An assessment of a household hazardous waste program.

For the City of Vancouver (CoV), completed a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Management Program Assessment at the CoV Landfill and the CoV South Transfer Station.

HHW were items legally accepted at the landfill, and included:

  • Antifreeze and empty antifreeze containers
  • Alkaline batteries and cell phones
  • Lead acid batteries
  • Propane tanks
  • Smoke and carbon monoxide tanks
  • Thermostats
  • Used oil, oil filters and empty oil containers.

In addition, unknown or abandoned hazardous wastes were also found at the Landfill and Transfer Station. The CoV manages these wastes to avoid disposal in the landfill.

The objectives of the project were to identify gaps in the existing program and to provide recommendations for improvement. Site inspections, interviews and document reviews were conducted. In addition, conceptual designs for upgrades to each facility were provided.
